The Africa Dialogue Series 2025 is here

The theme of the 2025?edition of our annual Africa Dialogue Series (ADS 2025) is “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations.”

This is also the theme of the year 2025 adopted by African Heads of State.

The ADS 2025 aims to stimulate?informed reflection on justice for Africans and people of African descent and encourage meaningful dialogue on reparations.??It will provide a platform for partners and stakeholders to assess the effectiveness of current international strategies and frameworks concerning reparative justice for Africans and people of African descent, and advocate for policies to boost initiatives that enhance financial, environmental, economic, and social justice.??

Through the following three sub-themes, ADS 2025 seeks to amplify a new narrative about Africans and people of African descent,?engaging a wide range of stakeholders to contribute towards innovative policymaking and actionable solutions that accelerate the achievement of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the 2063 Agenda of the African Union across the continent.

Learning from the Past: Transatlantic Slave Trade, Colonialism, Extractive Economies and Institutions in Africa

“We do not just risk repeating history if we sweep it under the carpet, we also risk being myopic about our present.” Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Author.

The overall objective of this week is to set the stage for an in-depth discussion of the African Union’s theme of the year through a better understanding of the continent’s history and interaction with the rest of the world.?

The transatlantic slave trade and colonial rule had a long-lasting impact on African societies, cultures, languages and institutions and presented unique socio-economic and political challenges that modern-day Africans and people of African descent are still grappling with. ?

Understanding the Present: Economic, Social and Cultural Justice for Sustainable Development

The sub-theme will explore perspectives to address the structural challenges associated with Africa’s extractive economic model and strengthen institutions to release the continent’s potential for domestic resource mobilization, which allows African countries to control their own economic and financial resources for sustainable development and durable peace.

Building the Future: Healing and Reparations towards Socio-Economic Justice for Africans and People of African Descent

“It is high time for reparatory justice frameworks to be put in place.”? Antonio Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General

This sub-theme will explore partnerships to pursue reparatory justice, repair and recovery from the psychological trauma endured from colonial and neo-colonial exploitation to restore the human dignity of Africans and people of African descent. ?

High-Level Political Dialogue: Bringing it all together

The ADS will culminate with the High-Level Political Dialogue (HLPD), which will bring together high-level policymakers from African member states to tie the threads and discuss policies that aim to shape our common future and deliver justice for all Africans and people of African descent.
